Teacher Eva Hernandez uses a variety of strategies to accommodate the individual learning styles of students at Mae M. Walters Elementary School in Hialeah. She incorporates cooperative learning as a tool to solve mathematical problems, uses hands-on activities in science and math, promotes critical thinking throughout her lessons, and motivates students to reach their highest potential. A National Board Certified teacher, Ms. Hernandez serves as grade chairperson, mentors new teachers and serves on the school's reading, social and technology committees. She presents parent in-services to further unite school and home as partners, and teaches in the after-school and Saturday school programs. Ms. Hernandez uses assessment data for planning instruction, and her students' growth is continual. In 2003, she was selected as the Francisco R. Walker Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year.
