Enedelia Schofield, principal of Echo Shaw Elementary School in Cornelius, has demonstrated how to achieve impressive academic performance at a low-income school, half of whose students are second-language learners. With her extensive background in general and bilingual education, Ms. Schofield designed and implemented a highly successful dual immersion language program at Echo Shaw Elementary. Her leadership has resulted in the school's receiving an "Exceptional" rating in the state's demanding new report card system. The daughter of migrant farm workers, Ms. Schofield pursued a law career for several years before returning to her true vocation-education-and the community in which she grew up. She is the inspiration behind the "I Have a Dream" Foundation, which provides college scholarships to disadvantaged children.
