Emily Stanford has turned her second-grade classroom at Shreve Island Elementary School in Shreveport into a balanced literacy environment by implementing a wide variety of reading and writing strategies to help her students master language arts. Combining technology and community resources with inquiry-based learning and hands-on activities, Mrs. Stanford has dramatically boosted reading scores. She has also improved math achievement through her training under LaSIP. She collaborates with a full-inclusion special education teacher and paraprofessional to meet the educational needs of every child. Mrs. Stanford has organized Family Math Nights and a parent night for the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, and is a member of several school committees. She also works with new teachers as an assessor and mentor.
