Elsa Rodriguez-Trejo, math teacher at Reading High School in Reading, uses rocket launchers, a linear lab and other hands-on applications to illustrate the real-world relevance of abstract math concepts. These projects are especially effective in helping her bilingual students - who comprise half of her class population - improve their confidence and understanding of math. As a member of the committee responsible for aligning the district's math program to state standards, Ms. Rodriguez-Trejo has been instrumental in enhancing the math curriculum, including the restructuring of several fundamental math courses. She has also contributed to the overall well-being of her students as a trained facilitator in the school's Students Assistance Program.
