Fifth-grade teacher Elizabeth (Perkins) Pitzer has pioneered team-teaching and cooperative learning at Arcanum Elementary School in Arcanum. Among the unique, inquiry-based programs Mrs. (Perkins) Pitzer has created is "The Great Math Detectives," a math club for fifth-graders that uses manipulatives to strengthen students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Critical thinking is developed in Mrs. (Perkins) Pitzer's in-depth unit on media literacy, in which students examine the impact of advertising on society. Mrs. (Perkins) Pitzer, who in 1996 received National Board certification, is a third-generation educator. She takes an active role in Project Discovery, participates in numerous curriculum committees and community organizations and is a mentor teacher.
