Edna Forsgren is the sole teacher and administrator at Duckwater Elementary School, a multi-grade school in Duckwater. Working together with two teaching aides, Mrs. Forsgren teaches all subjects at every grade level to the 27 kindergarten through eighth-grade students attending the school. For the past eight years, students at Duckwater Elementary School have participated in the Cowboy Poetry Contests held in Tonopah, Ely and Elko. The integrated curriculum Mrs. Forsgren has developed lends itself well to preparing for this activity. The event, she explains, "has a special meaning for many of the students from this rural setting, as many of their family members work in professions that are often mentioned in the poetry." In a school that frequently acts as the center of community activities, events such as this one serve to enrich both the students and the community.
