Seventh grade math and algebra teacher Duane Miller has applied the rigorous standards of his Air Force background to successfully restructure the school governance system at Eugene Burroughs Middle School in Accokeek. As chairman of the School Planning and Management Team, Mr. Miller created an organizational system called "Action Groups" that empowers teachers to take responsibility for developing and implementing school management policies. He led the Burroughs math department in a massive regrouping of students, which yielded significantly higher scores on state math tests. As a member of the district's Mathematical Department Curriculum Development Committee, Mr. Miller developed outstanding student-centered math courses, allowing other math teachers district-wide to benefit from his expertise.
