Drexel Sammons teaches social studies to fifth and sixth graders at Crescent Elementary School in Beckley, where he is known for employing novel methods to stimulate student's interest. His inventiveness has included such tactics as using the quiz show formats of Jeopardy and Family Feud to review class material before a test. In addition to serving on a number of professional councils, curriculum committees and task forces, Mr. Sammons also teaches at a county Women's Resource Center, where the children range from kindergarten to twelfth grade. In 1984-85, he was named Raleigh County's Teacher of the Year, and in 1988 he received a county Excellence in Teaching Award and was selected as a state DAR Outstanding Teacher of American History.
