Tom Christie, Ed.D., teaches science and health to the fifth and sixth grade students of Deerfield Elementary School in Lawrence. Dr. Christie, whose greatest joy is seeing the success of his students, was inspired by his own childhood teachers. He became an educator so that he might similarly encourage his students to reach their potential. "I determine the individual level of thinking, learning style, basic skills levels and communication abilities of my students," says Dr. Christie, "and from this diverse information, I try to develop lessons that truly challenge every member of my class--from the learning-disabled to the gifted child." Dr. Christie has been named a Kansas Master Teacher and is founder of the Committee for Awareness in Public Education. He is a recipient of the 1992 Presidential Award for excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching.
