"Twenty or thirty years into your career, you won't find yourself asking 'what have I contributed to this complicated world,' says Susan Rodriguez, an art teacher at the Overbrook Educational Center in Philadelphia; "If you choose a career in education, you will know." At the Center, Dr. Rodriguez has spearheaded a unique arts program for students, giving particular attention to developing art instruction for those who are blind or visually impaired. For children such as these, Dr. Rodriguez believes that adapting materials to stimulate their senses is particularly important. The ART START program, which she helped establish, combines students' own creative development with a curriculum that increases their appreciation of other cultures. In 1987, Dr. Rodriguez was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by Moore College of Art and Design.
