Currently, Dr. Steven Isoye serves in the voluntary role as the Chair of the Illinois State Board of Education. He was appointed by Governor Pritzker and his term will end in 2027. Isoye retired in June 2022 after serving as superintendent for Niles Township High School District 219 in Skokie, Illinois. Prior to District 219, he served as district superintendent for Oak Park and River Forest High School District 200 in Oak Park, Illinois. He served as principal of Maine East High School in Park Ridge, IL, since 2007. While at Maine East he was named the Illinois High School Principal of the Year in the spring of 2010. Previously, Isoye was principal of Warren Township High School's O'Plaine Campus in Gurnee, Illinois. Prior to entering the administrative role, Isoye taught science at Deerfield High School in Deerfield, Illinois; The Latin School in Chicago, Illinois; and Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois, teaching through a "constructivist" method of scientific study in which students analyzed material while the educator served as more of a guide than as the provider of information. He became chair of the science and health departments at Highland Park High School in Highland Park, Illinois, then became curriculum leader at Warren Township High School in science, family and consumer sciences, and industrial technology. Isoye has trained teachers from all grade levels in the constructivist method, and continued this training as principal. He has twice received the Award of Excellence in Teaching from the Illinois Science Teachers Association. In 1998, Isoye received the distinction of being the Illinois Teacher of the Year through the Illinois State Board of Education's Those Who Excel program. From 1998-2021, he served on the Board of Trustees for the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois.
