Sid Weathermon's first grade class at Martin Park Elementary School in Boulder is characterized by his belief that success in first grade fosters success later in life. Before cooperative learning became an educational trend, he was using it in the classroom. With a grant from IBM he enchanced an existing computer-based write-to-read program, developing academic skills and building pride and self-esteem in low-income and E.S.L. students. Dr. Weathermon heads the school parent volunteer committee and conducts a half-hour telephone conference with each of his student's parents once each month. His bringing people together facilitates change, benefiting his students and the entire school.
