Though Samuel Mitrovich taught biology at Freedom Area High School in Freedom, his advocacy of hands-on science instruction impacted students at all grade levels. Dr. Mitrovich's Science and Technology for Children program offered elementary students an opportunity to become personally involved in their science experiments. High school students improved their test scores dramatically, moreover, thanks to his BioLab Program, which provided access to a state-of-the-art biology lab not only to college-bound juniors and seniors, but to students at all grade levels. Among the technology used in the lab were obsolete computers that Dr. Mitrovich converted into instruments for scientific measurement and for which his students built the interfacing equipment.
