At Gentry High School in rural Indianola, English teacher and department chair Sammie Crigler strives to get students hooked on reading by making language arts dynamic and relevant. In her Trilogy project, students developed their higher-order thinking and social skills in compiling data on three local townships for a booklet that was presented to the school's department chairs. She introduced the I-Search Career Choice project, which provides students with opportunities to research and reflect on possible career choices. Dr. Crigler is president of the Mississippi Council of Teachers of English, and is a teacher-consultant for the Delta Area Writing Project and the Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute.
