"I teach children to become leaders who are concerned about the people they lead and serve," says Robert Villarreal, principal of Eastridge Community Elementary School in Aurora. In collaboration with the Public Education Business Coalition, Dr. Villarreal has transformed his school's traditional library into a media center that supports and extends classroom instruction. The media team, organized by Dr. Villarreal, works together with classroom teachers to develop instructional units that complement and enrich the traditional curriculum. The four-track year-round calendar Dr. Villarreal has implemented allows parents to select the academic year schedule that best suits their needs. This revised scheduling strategy also extends the traditional calendar and creates opportunities for students to attend supplemental remedial, reinforcement and enrichment classes. The school's privatized childcare program also offers a flexible and accommodating schedule of academic and recreational programs.
