In his seven years as principal of CY Junior High School in Casper, Robert Braughton has guided its transformation from traditional junior high to innovative middle school, including core classrooms and teachers. To foster a school culture where the faculty works with students, not above them, Dr. Braughton has placed students in school committees and the city's Chamber of Commerce, developed a Youth Empowerment Council, and created a program to recognize students' best practices in citizenship. He also encourages teachers to try out new ideas and programs, such as a stock market club that reinforces math learning. A member of the district's school improvement team, Dr. Braughton also chairs the school's technology team.
