At the new Montebello School in Phoenix, principal Martha Braly keeps her feet planted in the community and her eyes on the future. Her best-practice literacy, mathematics, and multicultural curricula are geared to the 21st century while remaining relevant to students' lives and interests, and she has assembled a visionary team to develop long-range missions for core-subject learning. Under Dr. Braly, Montebello has established a community-based bilingual program and is one of the first Title VII schools in the district to provide technology for bilingual students. She also has worked to secure neighborhood business support for the school's well-regarded after-hours program, and spearheaded a health clinic where students can receive care beyond what their families are able to afford.
