Making English come alive in the classroom was an attribute of Marilyn Whirry, a teacher of English at Mira Costa High School in the South Bay School District. An educator for 25 years, Dr. Whirry encouraged her students to express their opinions and ideas. She was considered a "very tough" teacher, yet students were forever striving to get into one of her classes. Dr. Whirry was constantly in demand to conduct training workshops, and the district her imparted her exemplary methods of instruction to fellow teachers through a series of videotapes made of her classroom techniques.
