Dr. Maggie Mejia is superintendent of the Sacramento City Unified School District in Sacramento, a position she has held since 2004. She is the first woman, and the first Latino, to lead the 51,000-student district. Previously, Dr. Mejia served five years as superintendent of the Montebello Unified School District in Montebello. As a former principal of Anaheim's Savanna High School, Mejia based her leadership on the belief that educators play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of our society. "Education is critical to the personal and social development of our nation's future citizens," she said. "We cannot, and must not short-change it." Mejia began her career as a classroom teacher with the Sweetwater Union High School District.
