"It is our belief that all students who become technologically literate develop a better understanding of the applications of academics," says Joseph Wojtena, principal of Champaign Central High School in Champaign. Last year, Dr. Wojtena presided over the establishment of the Central Academy for Technology and Applied Science at his school. The Academy, functioning as a school-within-a-school, prepares students for careers in business, computer technology and the applied sciences. Dr. Wojtena, who is currently involved in a major school renovation plan, is instituting four additional academies: a Home Economics Center for Hospitality and Child Care, a Technology Center, a Visual and Communications Arts Center and a Maintenance and Repair Servicing Center. Based on a hands-on integrated curriculum and fully geared to technology, these programs are designed to" prepare students to become the leaders and doers of the next generation."
