Jorge Alvarez teaches mathematics and science to Portuguese, Indian, Chinese and Hispanic students at Central High School, where he is also chair of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Department. Mr. Alvarez's commitment to students is shown in "DELTA-PLUS," a program he developed to help foreign students whose education had been neglected. Students in the program take concentrated lessons in ESL and are introduced to math, science and social studies. As they progress, they are moved into the regular bilingual program. Mr. Alvarez has received the Providence Citizen's Award and the Rhode Island Citizen's Award for his dedication to students whom proficiency in English is limited, as well as the Roberto Clemente Award for Outstanding Dedication to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the American Coalition Award of Merit.
