Jayne Carper, seventh-grade language arts and science teacher at Madison Number One Middle School in Phoenix, instituted a highly successful individualized reading program in her class. Each student, from remedial to gifted, had to read at least ten novels and was honored at year's end with a celebratory English Tea Party. The recipient of a doctorate in education technology, she developed and trained the school's Technology Club. This cadre of expert student technicians provided troubleshooting of classroom computers, freeing teachers to focus on student learning. Dr. Carper's school-within-a-school, nicknamed "Her House," integrated hands-on, minds-on science units and writing goals through a highly inventive curriculum.
