With the goal of helping her special needs students monitor and control their own behavior, teacher Janice Keeler created a Peer Counseling Program at Danville High School in Danville in which the students are trained to help each other solve problems. Dr. Keeler's program has reduced disciplinary referrals while at the same time boosting her students' self-confidence. She began a community-sponsored social skills club called "We Can Do Anything," which offers her young students a chance to pursue extracurricular activities matching their interests and skill levels. Dr. Keeler is currently developing the Academy of Merit, a career-focused program relating to metals and industry, and recently created a community-based mentor training program.
