As principal of Irving A. Robbins Middle School in Farmington since 1975, James Aseltine has focused on creating an environment that is supportive and academically stimulating for both students and teachers. Recognizing that student interest and ability are nurtured by individual attention, Dr. Aseltine has initiated a homeroom program in which all students meet daily in small groups with a teacher trained to encourage trust and respect. Dr. Aseltine also instituted the concept of "teachers as experts." Through in-service demonstration teadhing and videotaped instruction, Robbins School teachers share ways to improve their pool of collective skills.
