"Students in my classroom participate in active preparation for the real world," says Ilene Janson, a special education teacher and coordinator at Haynesfield Elementary School in Bristol. To meet her goal of developing a varied academic program on a level commensurate with the ability of each student, Mrs. Janson has implemented peer tutoring, individual and small group instruction, team teaching and technology-based instruction. In addition to the tailored resource classes that she offers, Mrs. Janson also spends part of the school day working with her students in a regular classroom environment, as part of a successful school-wide inclusion program that she has been developing since 1994. Her enthusiasm for and familiarity with technology-based education have allowed her to adapt computer programs, thereby allowing her students to explore various forms of audio-visual expression. In 1994, Mrs. Janson was named Tennessee Distinguished Classroom Teacher by the Tennessee Education Association.
