At Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in Miami, science teacher David L. Buncher motivates students through hands-on activities, in-depth questioning and class material related to current events. Throughout the year Dr. Buncher's students work on "digital portfolio assessments," electronically recording their daily activities, which they incorporate into PowerPoint presentations at the end of the year. Students with the most innovative presentations receive prizes. In addition to traditional science labs, Dr. Buncher's students perform original science research, which has led to many local, national and international awards. His students consistently score in the top five percent in state tests and College Board exams in chemistry and physics. A National Board Certified teacher, Dr. Buncher trains colleagues on incorporating technology into instruction and assessment, and launched a program in which students help senior citizens with computer literacy.
