Cherry (Jones) McLaughlin is principal at Flanders School in East Lyme. She approaches education as the work of a community of learners and teachers, encouraging such strategies as heterogeneous grouping of students and integrated curriculum projects in which students work together, sometimes across grades. Dr. (Jones) McLaughlin's support for inventiveness in the classroom is attested to by the fact that more than a third of her staff have been selected as state "Celebration of Excellence" winners and that in 1985 Flanders was awarded a Model School Grant by the Connecticut Department of Education. Dr. (Jones) McLaughlin also works with future teachers as a visiting assistant professor at Connecticut College in New London.
