In the past six years, principal Douglas Law has led the transformation of Niles Senior High School in Niles into a career-focused high school. Under the new model, students are required to declare a career major, complete a five-course sequence associated with that major and participate in career-related internships. In addition, Mr. Law and his staff have improved the school's academic performance by implementing higher graduation requirements. The result has been fewer dropout and disciplinary problems, improved attendance and an increase in students pursuing post-secondary education. A frequent presenter at state and regional conferences, Mr. Law also hosts visiting educators interested in Niles's model of a career-based school.
