Science teacher Matt Dean's enthusiasm for science and learning is so infectious that students clamor to enroll in his classes at Buckhorn High School in New Market. His laboratory-based courses incorporate cutting-edge technology, including microvideo cameras, computer-based simulations, and microcomputer-based laboratory interfaces and probes. He has developed the lab manuals for all of his courses and maintains a Web site for his students that features printable PowerPoint presentations, a discussion board, and live, synchronous chat sessions after school. Sponsor of the National Honor Society and coach of Buckhorn's Scholars Bowl team, Mr. Dean has raised student achievement through his work with the High Hope tutoring program. Recipient of numerous awards, he has presented at several science education workshops and has served as a mentor teacher.
