Prior to becoming assistant principal for instructional services this year at Ralph L. Fike Senior High School in Wilson, Donna Simms was a science teacher for 20 years, covering the waterfront of science instruction, from chemistry, physics, and biology, to earth and environmental science and physical science. Among her best-known innovations has been the Simms Science Show, in which she presents science demonstrations in the guise of a magic show, using chemicals to create eye-popping explosions and later explaining the science behind the trick. Ms. Simms also developed a Writing for Fun and Learning unit, which combines science with creative writing and performing arts projects.
