Donald Moran retired in 1998 after 35 years of teaching. Previously, Moran was principal of Grant Elementary School in Rockwell Gardens, where his open-door policy involved parents, faculty and community leaders in all levels of decision making. His strategies for enriching the lives of his students included the Rockwell Community/Inter-Agency Network, which offered alternatives to gang life, as well as computer and fine arts instruction, and a program called "Skills for Growing Up Home Alone." Moran also helped develop the Center for Early Childhood Enhancement, a resource room where parents and teachers could find books, games and toys that reinforce educational skills for four- and five-year-olds. Moran's awards include the 1990 Whitman Foundation Award for Excellence in Education and the 1991 Borg-Warner Outstanding School Leadership Committee.
