Twenty-six years ago, Donald Moody became the first principal of Hempstead Senior High School in Dubuque. Today, Mr. Moody has the satisfaction of continuing to head one of the "premier high schools in the State." Mr. Moody's focus on student achievement is reflected in such innovative programs as Hempstead High School's student-management program, which assigns students who have been tardy or absent to supervised study halls. The program, which functions on the premise that school time is a valuable commodity, expects all students to complete all assignments and to replace missed school time. REACH (Respecting Ethnic and Cultural Heritage) and GESA (Gender Expectations in Student Achievement) are two of the programs in which Mr. Moody is currently involved. The School Administrators of Iowa have named Mr. Moody the 1995 Secondary School Principal of the Year.
