A master teacher in sixth-grade math and social studies, Dodd Caudill combines creativity with content expertise at LaRue County Middle School in Hodgenville. Whether the topic is prime numbers, decimals or fractions, Caudill finds clever, hands-on ways to differentiate instruction and engage students in the learning of core content. Often using technology to connect subject matter with student interests, Caudill highlights his lessons with custom-made multimedia and video presentations and maintains a Web site for use by students and parents. He has served as the extended school services (ESS) coordinator for five years, constantly revising the program to best meet student needs. Caudill is chair of the Professional Development Committee, preparing and distributing needs assessments to help his colleagues improve their teaching. He has also chaired the textbook adoption committee and helped design the curriculum map for his school. Sixth-grade math and social studies scores have improved as a result of Caudill's instruction, with many students scoring at or above grade level on diagnostic tests.
