In teacher Denise Frederick's geography classes at Wickford Middle School in North Kingstown, students frequently learn by venturing beyond the classroom walls. Through her Memories of the War in the Pacific project, students studied the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor by interviewing family and community members about their experiences of the event and compiling the interviews in a booklet. During the 1996 Summer Olympics, Mrs. Frederick implemented the CyberTorch project at Wickford, in which students used the Internet to track the path of the Olympic torch across the country. After the Games, students interviewed several torchbearers about their experiences and posted these interviews on the school Web site.
