Fine arts teacher DeLois Booker inspires excitement about the arts among her students at Portageville Elementary School in Portageville. Working with each child individually, she engages students in differentiated lessons and hands-on activities, from drawing to building objects with Popsicle sticks. Skilled in classroom management, authentic instruction and assessment, inclusion and cross-curricular instruction, Mrs. Booker serves as a lead teacher in the district's fine arts program and provides after-school tutoring in reading, math, science and social studies. Her students have not only improved their scores but several have received college scholarships in the fine arts. As a result of her work on the fine arts portion of the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP), she was one of two educators selected to present a summation of the MAP to the state board of education in 2001.
