Debra Calvert recently became the instructional specialist at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School in Waldorf. In this position, she works with all the teachers in the school to help improve instruction, meeting with them on a regular basis and visiting their classrooms to observe and provide staff development at the school level. She works closely with the principal of the school as well as the instructional staff at the central office to keep all staff informed of educational issues. One of the many benefits of her job is that she is able to continue to work closely with children in the classroom. Previously, Ms. Calvert was the eighth grade team leader and language arts teacher at John Hanson Middle School in Waldorf, where she created highly motivating lessons that incorporated state learning standards. Each year she rigorously prepared and motivated her students for the five-day Maryland State Performance Assessment Program (MSPAP) test, about which she created an informational Web site, including test-taking skills and strategies. She helped all of her students pass the Maryland Functional Writing Test and developed a computer prototype of the test for a special education social studies class.
