Fifth-grade teacher Deborah Pardue employs a variety of methods in her interdisciplinary curriculum at Yucca Elementary School in Artesia. Mrs. Pardue uses manipulatives such as playing cards and chess pawns to teach math concepts. She involves her students in the Globe Program, a joint project of NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in which students nationwide measure environmental and weather data at their schools and post this data on the Internet for use by scientists. Mrs. Pardue recently led a team that aligned the district's hands-on science kits with state science standards and is now working to enhance those kits. She serves as a mediation coordinator, helping students develop positive interpersonal skills.
