As the site-based trainer for differentiated instruction at Pinon Hills Elementary School in Minden, teacher Debbie Davis works to meet the individual needs of each of the fifth- and sixth-graders in her multi-age classroom. She uses literature circles with enrichment or remedial activities as needed, developmentally appropriate groups for spelling study, compacted curriculum for more accelerated students, and a reading buddy program to build a sense of classroom community. Mrs. Davis provides monthly in-service training to her fellow teachers on differentiated instruction, and has made presentations on this topic and on multi-age education to the Board of School Trustees. She is also a specialist in literacy and helped develop and write the district's rubrics for writing competency.
