Deanna Descoteaux is more than a Reading Recovery teacher at Conant Elementary School in Concord; she is an instructional leader as well. As literacy leader for the first grade, Mrs. Descoteaux created a collaborative approach to reading instruction as part of a grant intended to decrease class size. Two years ago, when the Concord School District initiated a new professional development model, her presentation on "Best Practices in Teaching Writing" was so successful, she was asked to repeat it for a second year. Her success with students led to a video program entitled, "Links to Literacy" during which she modeled portions of a reading lesson with a child and responded to interview questions; the program was aired locally. Mrs. Descoteaux is involved in "Requisites of a Leader," an interactive satellite program for educational leaders across the nation.
