Even after 20 years of teaching music, Dean Peterson, choral director of Hellgate High School in Missoula, continues to make new discoveries. Noting that the female voice tends to mature more quickly than the male, Mr. Peterson has divided the freshman choir accordingly, to the benefit of all. By giving the boys this kind of individual attention, he has helped them take more risks in their singing, and by the time they rejoin a mixed choir in their sophomore year, their voices are more confident and mature. Mr. Peterson also developed the Missoula Youth Choir, allowing students to perform in choir beyond the regular school year.
