Since 1992, David Hottenstein, principal of Hatboro-Horsham High School in Horsham, has worked with the National Association of Secondary School Principals conducting regional workshops on secondary school restructuring throughout the country. Mr. Hottenstein is also part of a seven-principal team involved with the National Commission of High School Restructuring project sponsored in part by the NAASP. At his school, Mr. Hottenstein has led the effort to implement Intensive Scheduling, a major reform that seeks to organize time more efficiently, use the new configuration to instruct more effectively and rebuild the curriculum to better meet the needs of the students. An evaluation of the first four years of the new plan shows improved discipline, an increased honor roll roster, improved standardized test scores and a significant decrease in the number of students who fail academically or drop out of school.
