David Burns is a teacher and the site coordinator of staff development at Foothill High School in Sacramento. In his 11th-grade social science and history classes, students often learn history by re-enacting it. Women's suffrage is explored in a skit called "You Were There" and World War I is evoked in a simulation called "Letters from the Trenches." An innovative instructor, Burns designs his own assessment tools to gauge student performance. As school activities director, Burns orchestrates countless activities for parents, staff and students, both on and off-campus. Chair of the district's Curriculum Council, Burns's work has influenced the development of standards-based instruction for U.S. history throughout the district.
