David Bartz, a fourth grade teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School in Mandan, has served as an officer for state and local educational associations, presented at numerous professional conferences, and has advised and mentored student teachers in his classroom. He played an important role in starting a state wide beginning teacher mentoring program based on his dissertation. He is also responsible for introducing his students to new technologies. On a more fanciful note, he has created "Ocean Fair," a unit that is now officially part of his school's curriculum. Dr. Bartz explains that the geographical position of North Dakota, smack in the middle of the country, means that very few of his students have had the chance to experience the ocean. His solution-"I bring the ocean to the classroom." The ocean serves as a theme around which students read, write and perform scientific experiments.
