Dane Gilbert, principal of Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville, requires all freshmen to take a one-semester course instilling in them the organizational and study skills they will need to succeed throughout their high school careers and beyond. Previously, Mr. Gilbert was the principal of Woodland Acres, an elementary school located in a severely low-income community. There Mr. Gilbert began a partnership with the U.S.S. Boone, a Naval vessel whose sailors spent time with the Woodland Acres students, tutoring and mentoring them, giving them tours of the ship, and providing them with positive male role models. During Mr. Gilbert's tenure, Woodland Acres was recognized as a national exemplary Title I school for its students' academic gains.
