Technology Coordinator Cynthia Hagino helped transform Waialua Elementary School in Waialua into a technologically literate community that one fellow teacher described as "a global school--a school without walls." For the first graders in her "Entomology Academy," she arranged a videoconference with an entomologist from a local museum. She also taught the students in her "Hydroponics Academy" to conduct research on the Internet and to create their own Web page. Ms. Hagino's work at the district and site levels for systemic school improvement furthered educational equity, built tolerance among a diverse student body and boosted student achievement. Her efforts have helped Waialua Elementary earn recognition both as a National Model Network School and as a State Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
