Cynda Carr, who teaches third grade at Anthony Elementary School in Anthony, left an established position in the business world to become an elementary school teacher. Twenty years later, she continues to be grateful to the family and friends who encouraged her to follow her dream. "I felt I could make more of a difference as an educator," she says. The life of service that she has chosen, in and out of school, casts her as a highly visible role model in the rural area where she lives. At her school, Miss Carr has instituted a Pen Pal project that pairs senior citizens with elementary school children. The project entails monthly visits, gift-exchanges, festivities and the inclusion of senior citizens in school activities. Advanced training in teaching students with learning disabilities has also allowed Miss Carr to transform many lives.
