Eighth-grade English teacher Corey Oliver inspires his students at Bob Courtway Middle School to "Strive for Excellence!" both in and out of the classroom. Oliver encourages reading engagement in a before-school book club that he initiated for reluctant and avid readers. Aware that valuable learning experiences can be attained beyond the classroom, Oliver provides students in his ALL-STAR club, which he has sponsored since the school's inception, with opportunities to benefit their school and community through various service projects. As an adjunct instructor at the University of Central Arkansas, he provides his students—prospective educators—a panoramic view of teaching and tools to promote literacy in all content areas. A National Board Certified Teacher, Oliver mentors teachers during the certification process and has served as a consultant for many National Board Certification- related projects at Harding University and the University of Central Arkansas. He serves on the board of the Arkansas Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts and has participated in international training programs for educators in Russia, China, and Japan. As a result of his superior instruction, Oliver's students typically score in the top percentile on formative and summative assessments.
