Connie Murphree teaches sixth-grade mathematics at Hernando Middle School. Selected Mississippi's 1990 Christa McAulifee Fellow, she used her fellowship grant to gather a team of educators to develop Project Infinity, which trains teachers to identify "at-risk" students in mathematics. At regional meetings, she trained teachers who would in turn train others in these skills, hence the project's name, Infinity. The project also produced a manual with activities for teaching core math skills in grades 5-8. Ms. Murphree was appointed to the initial Board of Directors for the DeSoto County Excellence in Education Foundation in 1991. She has received the IMPACT II Award for her innovative method of teaching the metric system, and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching of Mathematics. She was named DeSoto County Teacher of the Year in 1988.
