Latin teacher Clyde E. Lehmann uses poetry, performance, song and even travel to keep students excited about learning at Northside Health Careers High School in San Antonio. One of the most important tenets of his teaching is developing his students' ability to think for themselves. The success of his approach is reflected in the high number of Mr. Lehmann's students who receive gold and silver medals at National Latin competitions. Four of his former pupils have become Latin teachers. Mr. Lehmann is sponsor of the Northside Health Careers Latin Club, one of the largest organizations on campus with more than 100 members. He has twice served as president of the San Antonio Classical Society and has presented at state and national conferences. Mr. Lehmann still finds time to collaborate with his wife (also a Latin teacher) in designing customized summer tours of ancient Roman sites for students.
