Dr. Moran is currently Director of Assessment and Accountability, and formerly principal of McCulloch Intermediate School and Armstrong Elementary School. He also served as the assistant principal at Highland Park Middle School in Dallas, Dr. Moran was an Advanced Placement history teacher at Highland Park High School, also in Dallas, at the time he received the Milken Educator Award. As a teacher, Dr. Moran went beyond course requirements to teach his students about leadership and community service. In order to maximize instructional time, Dr. Moran made lesson plans, lecture notes, assignments and grades available to students online and participated in Internet discussion groups. He also ran a nine-week after-school volunteer leadership course. Dr. Moran spearheaded the school's involvement with Habitat for Humanity and led the creation of a partnership with the University of Texas at Austin to provide teacher training in leadership and character education. Dr. Moran recently earned a Ph.D.
